Holdover Rainbow

No class and no where to kayak means it’s time to go fishing! Thomas Grimes, a close friend and classmate, and I got our gear together and drove to the river. After our two minute drive we arrived at Thomas “money” spot.

Thomas snatchin up MJ

Right of the bat I caught a sucker fish! Then a holdover rainbow, following a stock rainbow made for 3 fish within the first hour of fishing two holes pretty hard. Thomas and I both saw so many fish flashing there bellies and surfacing! Just made you wanna keep going.

One of the many fish Thomas caught was a feisty little thing. We named him MJ2 because he was jumping out of the water and getting some major air just like Michael Jordan would when he plays basketball. Ha.

Sucker fishy

After a couple hours we moved to a new spot upstream where we both caught a handful more! Within the first 5 casts I caught 2 fish and Thomas was working another hole where he caught probably 6 alone.

All in all it was a successful day. Can’t wait to get on the water again!!!

Rapid Magazine agrees that stylin' this spring is our K-Bomb Mandala Sprayskirt!

"Like any good accessory, Bomber Gear's K-Bomb skirt turns heads and can be personalized to match the rest of your outfit." -Rapid Mag

Finding a skirt that will stay on the boat in all conditions and keep you dry can be hard to find, though now you can have the best of both worlds (with an added fashion forward sense).

Madness I tell you

Hold that pose

Even though I was tired and ready to crash last night, I forced myself to go out and watch the snowboard pipe practice. It’s outrageous to watch these guys (and girls) soar down steep gradient, whip around, then smoothly land and set up for the next trick. I managed to capture a decent photo on my phone (haven’t uploaded the pics from the 60D).

Below the superpipe

Today was filled with funness (I just created a word, go with it). First, I sorted through GoPro clips of yesterday’s Sarah Burke tribute, Shaun White on the superpipe, and Justin Hoyer and Heath Frisby doing their snowmobile freestyle thanggg. Not only am I the first to see the raw footage, but I trim it down to the best clips. Wait wait wait,

So many wires. I mean everywhere!

they trust me to pick the best clips for the editing room? What a responsibility! It’s a good feeling when your opinion is trusted. Seeing those shots on commercials or videos online is pretty cool!

Later today I helped shoot the “Next at X” and “Navy” clips you see during commercials. I enjoy this task (yesterday I did too)! Sutch (the cameraman) and I exchange creative ideas and find ways to stay outside as long as possible. These shots are used as a marketing tool, everything is about marketing or PR with an event like this.

Also, I met some cool guys this evening. They showed me the technical side of things. The wiring in the picture is a small, small glimpse of how complex and intricate this operation is. Being here and seeing this setup firsthand has blown my mind. Amazing.

Rewind

After running a flack jacket to a guy at the start line for snowmobile, I was talking to my dad on the phone walking back to PreTures (“preset & features” for XGames) when I saw a familiar face that stopped me dead in my tracks, jaw dropped and wide-eyed. I said,”Dad, I gotta go,”  before he could say bye I hung up the phone and was walking toward Steve Fisher.

Contour Tent

He pretty much saw me pass the tent, take two steps back, and stare at him in disbelief. Steve was smiling as I walked in the Contour tent saying, “Are you kidding me. I can’t believe you’re here.” He replied, “You must be a paddler? How are you?”  The rep next to him laughed, probably at the fact I was the only one who noticed Steve back in the corner, all alone, on his computer. But I answered his question and he continued to ask where I was from and why I was in Aspen. I was curious why he was at the XGames and how his expedition to the Congo went. He said it was awesome and he’s editing the footage right now. Everything else was a blur…I walked away stunned.

Yes, I was the typical groupie and asked for a picture. No shame. I was stoked to see him, and hear that accent.

There he is

Eternity is so much fun. It’s the most forgiving play spot in the SE. Perfect for learning and experimenting.

Kleberg and Caldwell play last winter at eternity

Honestly, I really haven’t play boated much at all. My first time in a play boat was March, and I could probably count on my hand the times I’ve spent playing in a hole. I only know how to do flat spins…I’ve tried to do a loop probably 3 times and have failed every time.

I prefer to move down river and not just stay at one feature, but it’s still fun. Besides, I’m a little hesitant to just throw myself around in a hole when a have a bad shoulder. I do wish I knew how to do more stuff though, but it takes time practicing and just getting out there on the water.

After my beat down. Now ready for the melt down.

I’m a firm believer that play boating makes you a better boater. Not only does your roll become super solid, but you know how to react if you do get stuck in a hole by surprise. I know this from personal experience. A couple weeks ago at the last drop of Lost Paddle on the Upper Gauley, I got surfed in a really shallow hole river left. After about 20 seconds I finally got out, then washed down in another hole right below. Switching from my on side to off-side roll and throwing back decks in attempt to catch the green water, I finally got out after about 15 seconds and was super pumped to still be in my boat! I would not have known how to react to the situation had I not spent time surfing holes.

So, spending the time play boating definitely pays off in the end, even if your like me and don’t know how to do anything!

The video below isn’t anything special, it’s meant to be silly, so don’t be hatin’.  Liz and I sure do have flat spins on lockkkkkk. ;)

See you on the water!

Shuttle Bunny

Friday, Oct. 14, there were many boaters on the water in Saluda, NC on The Green River Narrows. I was perched on the rock listening to music and cheering people on as they paddle through the squeezer of a rapid: Go Left and Die.

Ashley using all my gear on the Upper Green! Looking good in the 2012 Mamba!

First, I set shuttle for friends who were paddling the Upper Green. Liz was taking Brandon and Ash. It would be Ashley’s first time kayaking and Brandon’s first time on this particular river. I was super excited to be apart of their experience. Then, I ventured off for a hike around the beautiful gorge. While waiting for some other friends to pass by (oh the duties of shuttle bunny) I took in the fall foliage and majestic beauty of The Green River Narrows.

I noticed while filming that Dagger’s Green Boat out numbered every long boat on the water. It wasn’t a surprise, but certainly confirmed the fact that the Green Boat was specifically made for this very river. Hince the name and popularity among the boaters.

Being out there made me even more psyched for this years race!
